udhiana, February-6: On the closing day of Nee Dhartiye, an exhibition of paintings by renowned city based artist Swarnjit Savi at Gallery Artmosphere ,Swarnjit Savi donated a cheque of Rs 11000-00 to EK PRAYAS- an NGO working for the differently abled children out of the sales of paintings during this show.Students, teachers and management came to see paintings on the moment. Paintings went to Canada, Chandigarh and Ludhiana.

Profuse in her appreciation of the paintings collection Sameera Bector said the paintings have a peaceful and positive aura about them. Well-known Delhi based artist Sidharth said the paintings of Savi are manifestation of the wish to see the world as a beautiful place. “The earth had a desire to be beautiful so nature took over with flora and fauna blooming all over. Man in his greed went on to destroy all that. Artists like Savi desire to obliterate that ugliness to recreate beauty,” he said. Mark Victor, an artist from California in USA calling it a wonderful work appreciated the subtle texture of the paintings. Appreciating what he called the spirituality offered by the paintings he said he found the subject-matter very intriguing. Savi, also a well known poet and photographer, has earlier showcased his artistic works at different places in India. His works have also been displayed in public places and in private collections in US, UK, Philipines, Uzbekistan and Afghanistan.

MANY YEARS BACK ONE EVENING I WAS WALKING IN PAU, SUDDENLY I WITNESSED A WONDERFUL LANE OF TREES FULL OF FIGURES, FEELINGS AND TALKING WITH ME. AT THAT TIME I WAS NOT WITH MY CAMERA.
AFTER THAT EACH TIME I WALKED THROUGH THE LANE I CLICKED MANY MANY PICS. THEN FOR AROUND 3 YEARS I WAS CLICKING THE TREES WHEREVER I TRAVE..

POSTER POEMS ( 1986-1989)

when my Punjab was feeling the heat of extremism, each one was thinking that when and how this phase will come to an end. Artists, writers, theatre-persons all were divided into 2 sections. One was keeping silence and were posing to be more intellectuals and the second section was actively participating against the negative forces. Poets - writers were writing on the issues concerned, Nukkad Natak and theatre shows were organized all over Punjab, Painters were painting the agony of the environment. In this situation i choose my role and started painting poster-poems (Amrita Pritam suggested this name for the form i was creating) in which i painted an image related to the extract of poem on art sheets with poster colors. The range of poets from the galaxy was from Baba Farid to the contemporary poets of my language. I made around 70 frames and it got an enthusiastic response from the viewers in different exhibitions in north zone. After then Gursharn Bha ji asked me if he could take the responsibility of shows, and i happily. He exhibited the show in each of his performance for many years. So this was my part to make the common man aware of the fact that what was happening in our state......

North East & Northern Poetry Festival, Ludhiana

Recently Sahitya Akademi New Delhi and Shabdalok organised a

North East and Northern Poetry Festival

at Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana.

Dr. Sutinder Singh Noor, Surjit Patar,Dr. Manjit Singh Kang and Amarjit Singh Grewal Inaugurated the festival by Lighting the lamp.

Amagjit Singh Grewal- an eminent critic

Poets from north east including Bengal and North participated and presented their poems into their language and the Punjabi Translations were presented by Punjabi poets . Long list of poets is Amarjit Ghumman (Punjabi) , Mandakranta Sen (Bengali) , Swarnjit Savi (Punjabi) , S.D. Dhaka (Nepali) , Malchand Tiwari (Rajasthani) , Naseem Shafai (Kashmiri), R.L. Thanmawia (Mizo) , Shymal Kanti Das (Bengali) , Nee1am Sethi (Hindi) , Parminder Jeet (Punjabi) , Mohan Sapra (Hindi), JaswantDeed (Punjabi), Sebanti Ghosh (Bengali) , Sylvanus Lamare (Khasi) , Sushil Beganna (Dogri) Nirupama Dutt (English), Manmohan (Punjabi), Makhan Kalita (Assamese), Madhav Kaushik (Hindi), Sardar Panchhi (Urdu), Darshan Buttar (Punjabi), Koijam Santibala Devi (Manipuri), Pankaj Saha (Bengali) , Harvinder Kaur (Hindi), Sukhvinder Amrit (Punjabi) and translations were done into punjabi by Surjit Patar, Swarnjit savi, Jagdish Kaur, Sukhwinder Amrit, Gurshminder Singh Jagpal and Jaswant Zafar.

Research papers on different poetry were presented by Prabal Kumar Basil- Bengali Poetry Today, Sukhdev Singh-Punjabi Poetry Today, Pradip Acharya-North-East Poetry Today, Tejinder Kaur - Northern Poetry Today.

It was a wonderful experience again. I share with you some moments of this two day festival

Navdeep Sihra’s first poetry book “In Red Deeps” released

Navdeep Sihra’s first poetry book “In Red Deeps” was released here on the occasion of “North east and Nothern Poetry festival,PAU’ by Dr.S.S. Noor, vice –President of Delhi Sahitya Academy. Mr. M. S. Kang,Vice – Chancellor of PAU was the Guest of Honor. Other dignitaries were S.Amarjit Grewal (Adviser,World Punjabi center, Patiala), Surjit Patar (recipient of saraswati Award), Swarnjit Savi (poet and painter ),Dr. Deepak Manmohan Singh,Mr. Ram Kumar Makhopadhyay, And Mrs.Renu Bhan.

Mandakranta Sen,a famous poet from Kolkata, highly appreciated the poems. Mr.Bhupinder Parihar, in the foreward,called Sihra’s poems “a pace setting Poetic Achievement”. Prof . Rajinder Singh (HoD Dept of English, SCD Govt College), wrote that there emerges in Navdeep’s Poems a poetic purpose which transcends her age and rises to the height of deeply felt experience.

World Punjabi Center is based in the campus of Punjabi University Patiala ( Punjab)

An Instituion for the promotion, development and research for the Punjabi. From 28th feb.- 1st march, 2010 a three faced programme (a seminar, live concert by Madan Gopal Singh and an Exhibition of paintings by Swarnjit Savi) has been organised .

My Oil Paintings will be on display from 28th. feb. - 14th march at the Museum and Art Gallery of Punjabi University, Patiala. Inaugural Ceremony will be at 11 a.m. on 28th. feb. Our Eminent Punjabi painter SIDHARTH will Inaugurate the show named 'Nee'.

AMRITSAR VISIT WITH DR. N. GOPI (TELGU POET)

These days I am busy with the Indian poetry translations into Punjabi. One of friend poets from south Dr. N. Gopi a Telgu Poet , Professor and the yongest Ex. Vice chancellor of Osmania University, Hydrabad wished to see Amritsar when he was at Nabha to recite his poems in All India Poetry Festival organized by Sahitya Academy, Delhi and Racna Vichar Manch Nabha . Dr. Gopi (Gopal) has won Sahitaya Academy Award for his poetry collection “ Kalani Nidera Ponivanu” (Samay Ko Sone Nahin Doonga) in 2000. It was a special moment for me. We visited Darbar Sahib (The Golden Temple), Jalliyan Wala Bagh and Wagha Border along with my wife Manjit Kaur and Dr. Gopis wife Aruna ji. During this time discussions on Sikhism, Partition , British Rule and Patriotism went on and on…..

BOTH POETS WERE WELCOMED WITH FLOWERS FOLLOWED BY A WELCOME SPEECH BY DR. MANJIT SINGH , HEAD OF DEPT. THEN BOTH POETS RECITED THEIR POEMS, SAVI ALSO TRANSLATED UKTAMOY'S POEMS INTO PUNJABI. FOLLOWED BY ABRIEF DANCE BY UKTAMOY THAT ENTHRALED THE STUDENTS.

EVENING WAS A TREAT WITH UKTAMOY AT THE RESIDENCE OF DR. KARANJIT SINGH, WHO TRANSLATED MOST OF RUSSIAN LITERATURE FOR PUNJABI WORLD DURING HIS 13 YEARS STAY AT MOSCOW. BOTH DR. KARNJIT AND HIS WIFE SHARED THEIR VIEWS WITH UKTAMOY IN RUSSIAN AND UZBEK. DR. NOOR, DR. RAWAIL SINGH, SH. CHAN JI ADE THE EVENING AMEMORABLE FO EVERYONE .

IN LITERATURE AND POLITICS SHE MENTIONED THE NAMES OF JAWAHAR LAL NEHRU, SHRI LAL BAHADUR SHASHTRI AND MRS. INDIRA GANDHI FORMER PRIME MINISTERS OF INDIA. SHE TOLD OF SCHOOLS,AND ROADS ARE IN THE NAME OF THESE POLICAL ICONS FROM INDIA. SHE ALSO TALKED OF ZULFIA KHANUM AND AMRITA PRITAM, RABINDER NATH TAGORE AND MANY OTHERS FROM THE GALLAXY OF INDIAN WRITERS.

ABHIVYAKTI – BANGLURU- 2009

Sahitya Academy Delhi organized a Trannslation Prizes-2008 and ABHIVYAKTI- poetry and Short Story Reading Programme at Bongluru- Karnatka from 20-22 Sept. 2009 at Kanada Bhawan.

22 wrirers recived translation awards for their translation from one Indian language to another. As I was a part of Poetry and Short Story reading Programme, I reached Bangluru on 20-09-09 evening .

28 poets from all Indian languages and 9 short story writers were present loaded with poems, short stories and their experiences about writing.

The first session was a unique in the form, every translator shared experiences about translations. How they tried hard to reach nearer to original text and its meanings, what type of problems they face, what they thought before starting and what they faced later. Overall it was wonderful to listen this inspiring and motivating session.

Next were the short story telling session. In this session Parsanna made it the most effective in his inaugural speech. In the session where writers were to share their experiences about writing, I found that the concentration shifted more towards the profile telling rather than how they came across the problematic subject and how they expressed while transferring on paper, what were the tussles tackling the characters , language, environment and other elements of their writings.

Presentations about their wrting experiences : Sanjukta Bandopadhyay (Bengali), Chitra Mudgal (Hindi), Vaidehi (Kannada), Paramita Satpathy (Oriya), Volga (Telugu)

Then Poets were on their turn with poems, as per design every poet will recite one poem in original language to which he/she belonged followed by recitation of 3-4 poems either in Hindi or English. Every poets recited first part very well but most of them were just reading the text of the poem without the feelings they were filled with while reciting the original. In the valedictory statement Dr. Parsanna pointed this and called for the need of professional translations and feelful readings which was found only with 30% of poets.

Another feather clipped with evening was Manipuri Folk Dance Performance of Beautiful , energetic young boys- n- girls. It was Krishna with Radha and Gopies with all love, play and sensuesness that made the audience spellbound with music and visual.

I would say it was a wonderful experience, full of newness, fresh environment, a space for interaction with farther Indian languages, poets , writers and artists. Above all the packed audience who were enjoying each bit of the writer delivered to them.

Dr. S. S. Noor (Vice President of Sahitya Academy, New Delhi) who was the real backbone of design was time and again thanked by writers which he well deserved.

The new formed team of Sahitya Academy Delhi has accelerated the pace of organising programmes. This includes interactions within all Indian languages in the form of Translation Workshops, Seminars, Symposiums, Kavi Darbars and in many other forms. Recently a Translation Workshop was organized at Rabindra Bhawan, New Delhi for the translation of Kashmiri Poetry into Punjabi with the coordination of Dr. Rawail Singh. Mr. Aziz Hajini, Mrs. Renu Bhan and S. Harbhajan Singh Sagar represented Kashmiri poetry and Dr. Surjit Patar, Dr. Sutinder Singh Noor, Dr. Mohanjit, Sh. Amarjit Grewal, Dr. Manmohan, Dr. Vanita, Nirupama Dutt, Nitu Arora, Pawan Gulati and Swarnjit Savi were the translators. Every translator came with a homework done in hand and then in full four days they interacted with their kashmiri counterparts to reach the true feelings and meanings of original text in kashmiri poety and edited their translations as per the new gained suggestions. It was a wonderful experience with everybody. President Sahitya Academy Sh. Sunil Gangopadhya and Secretary Sh. A. Krishnamurthy visited the workshop in the inaugural and closing sessions , appreciated the work and assured the publication ‘MAHJOOR TON PICCHON’ within 15 days.Vice President Dr. Sutinder Singh Noor actively participated and translated poems in workshop inspite of his awfully busy schedule of meetings of academy for the future plans to be executed.

BOOK COVERS OF UKTAMOYS' POETRY PUBLISHED IN INDIA

Recently Uktamoy (Uktam Khanum) visited India for the releasing of her new published books in India. ‘My heart is Weeping’ translated in English by Qosim Mamourov and ‘Sada Ronda Ey Dil Mahia’ in Punjabi by poet, painter Swarnjit Savi. Both books were Released in Chandigarh By. Dr. Sutinder Singh Noor and Dr. Saroa and in Ludhiana by Dr. K. S. Kang Vice Chancellor Punjab Agricultural. Uktamoy is translated into Punjabi only after Zulfia Khanum of Uzbekistan, who was translated 20 years back by Amrita Pritam, and this time Uktamoy by Swarnjit Savi. A chain of programmes was organized to facilitate Uktamoy’s books at Chandigarh, Ludhiana, Fridkot and Amritsar.
Everybody including the most important literary critics like Dr. SS Noor, Amarjit Grewal, Dr. Niranjan Tasneem, Dr. Deepak Manmohan Singh, Manjit Indra , Dr. Raina, Navtej Bharti, Dr. Jagdev Singh, Prof. Aziz Parihar, Jaswant Zafar, Devendra Paul, Sushil Disanjh,Dr. Ambrish ,Nita Mohindra, Bhupinderpreet, Gurtej Koharwala,Vijay Vivek, Terjwinder Brar, Dev Dard and Bipan Preet from Punjabi, English and Urdu appricaited the poetry and welcomed the books particularly in Punjabi.

is an aura around the art world that has his roots in punjab and a fragrance throughout the world.
The alchemy of his colours is a mystic magic that becomes the the part of viewer mind and body touching every micro cell . His voice when enters for the first time declares the echo will be a permanent part of what we call ' Myself '.
In recent days i was blessed with some great moments in Ludhiana and Delhi in the ' Toone haari ' company of Sidharh- his paintings,music and films. I am feeling proud to share some photos with you.........

Recently at India Habitat Center, a seminar, film and slide show was organised " Sidharth 2008-09". Slide show of his new paintings- The Dacorated Cow, film about his life and works by K Vikram Singh and a film by Sidharth was on a screen alongwith an introduction by Dr. Madan Gopal Singh and a paper about Sidharth by Sushma Behl.

After the show a wonderful evening was organised at Sidharth's studio-4. A river of sufi singing by Dr. Madan Gopal Singh, Bhai Baldeep Singh and Jassi was flowing alongwith the sculpters, paintings and the colours of the alchemist Sidharth. Everybody was spellbound , timelessness was dominating even when Amarjit Grewal, Navtej Bharti, Jatinderpreet, Amarjit Sathi,Gurpreet and me was coming back to ludhiana .

Bandeep from India Today, Deepak Tondon, Gurdeep, Shivangi and Gaurja were among the gallaxy of artists.

KHAJURAHO - A WONDER IN SANDSTONE

Recently when Ajmer Rode visited India, we planned to visit Khajuro along with Amarjit Grewal – with a dense jungle within . We started from Ludhiana on a taxi and the first night was at Agra. Next morning the Taj was there in front of us with all for what it is known for. The grandure of the Taj was diluted the same evening when we reached the fort of Bundhelkhand just by the roadside view, that pulled us out of taxi to visit. It was a grate feeling to be there with the better architecture of pre electricity era- better than the Taj. We reached tired at khajuraho, booked hotel to wake up and reach at Khajuraho temples before the first ray of sunlight. It was thrilling to be there with a hand and eyes on camera and ears for the guide’s discourse. The other sound of appriciation was “ W O N D E R F UL” with the French pronunciation from our great Amarjit Grewal. Discussing the women created here in better body than Europe. Salute to the mastermind and the artisans and to the excess they have done……….. g r e a t ….

Punjab being host state, took the previlliage to translate all poems of different languages into Punjabi. Each Poet recited in his own language, on the backlit screen same poem appeared in English and one of the host poets presented the Punjabi Translation of the same. THE DANCING LINES

Like musical compositions, these photo prints are not the recording or representation of any pre-existing events. They, in themselves, are events. Working in the medium of light, Swaranjit Savi has written these visual events like lyrical poems and moulded them into sculptures.
This is a project of visual literacy. Savi has started this project to take on visual pollution created by the political and commercial use of art. This is a fight against the ugliness spreading in self and society. This is also to let the people know that the function of the art is not to promote commercial products and political leaders, but to produce beauty out of the interaction with society and environment.
While going to his office in the morning, he is threatened by the visual pollution of urban life, but in the late evening when he comes back to his home, the way he choreographs and sculpts the lights along the road, that ugliness of modern life is deconstructed.

Photography is the art of using and manipulating the camera and film to produce unique images of reality or formal abstractions. The subject and the stylistic or aesthetic intentions of the photographer will determine the "type" of photography.
In the present exhibition of Swarnjit Savi's photographic work he has explored the journey of light in a very poetic manner. His works are an evolution in thought with the climax being the actualization of a specific idea. A variety of visual ideas are attempted and consequently utilized in the finished product. He also uses the traditional concept and ideas of photography that are then modified by the process of addition and elimination. This creative process to be part of human evolution and to be part of every human being at the same time is part of an artiste's work. It is a matter of contacting this creativity and allowing it to flow in natural and unforced manner. This concept gives the impetus to attempt to construct the essence of movement. Movement in this sense becomes symbolic of the ever changing homeostatic environment and ultimately leads to a continuous new balance.
This allows the viewer a cross sectional examination of landscapes. The evolution of the form precedes the realization of what the form represents, encouraging a constant development and escalation within the work. The constant exploration in one's art making is what keeps the work fresh – alive. His true artistic vision begins and ends with this idea.

DANCING LINES
Swarnjit Savi’s profile on his blog describes him as a painter, poet, photographer, printer and publisher. An artist with multifaceted interests, Savi is a poet first and his poetic expression reflects in all his artistic creations –writings, paintings and photographs. His love for poetry is too evident in his latest series of photographs- ‘Dancing Lines’.
Using camera as a tool in a unique way, Savi has created a visual poetry in these images. A slower shutter speed of the camera makes a great experiment at night. By playing with the relative movement of the lights and the camera, Savi has created a rhapsody of colourful lines in these photographs . A beautiful blend of line and colour – the two strong elements of design in these images make the visual experience just ecstatic. Like a melodious song the photographs are enjoyable –pleasing to the eye and relaxing to the mind.

Taking a detour from his genre of poetry, Swaranjit Savi now takes art-lovers through another sensuous journey. This time it’s the semi-real world of digital paintings.
For those who think digital painting is simply playing with photographs on your PC, you gotta see it to know it. Savi explains, ‘‘Digital painting is closer to the art of painting than to photography.’’ It can best be described as the art of painting through technology, but cannot really be described aptly in words. A medium in-between the two, it’s a new form that has not yet caught up ’round here. One by one, Savi takes you through the 200 paintings which he has chosen out of almost 800 photographs.
And where did this idea germinate from? ‘‘When I was writing my poems titled Dehinaad almost a decade back, I took pictures of trees in which I would see all kinds of human forms - from sensuality to meditation. Then, last year, when this idea of digital paintings hit me, I updated my earlier collection of pictures by taking new shots of trees around me. From places around Ludhiana, to Shimla, Dalhousie, Manali... wherever I went, for almost eight months, I was obsessed with trees. These, I converted into a whole series, through technological tools. In this series, one can see trees entwined with each other, trees crying out for help, trees celebrating nature and in various other forms.’’
After a successful one-week exhibition at the Academy of Arts and Literature in Delhi last year, Savi has now put up his paintings for sale in the city. Though he is planning an exhibition here too, ‘‘but that will take some time.’’
And coming from Savi, you know you cannot expect but the unconventional. A lover of human forms and vibrant colours, this man in his 40s is a publisher by profession and a painter, photographer and a controversial poet. The underlying current in all his art is celebration - brazen celebration of life, sexuality, even death. His paintings are splattered with un-common shades, his canvas is uncommonly big.
For the record, he was the first publisher in Punjab to use technology in printing and his poetry ventured into avenues that Punjabi poets hadn’t dared tread (remember Kaameshwari and Ashram?). Not surprising then, that barring another artiste of this genre in Chandigarh, Savi is the only one in the region, definitely the first in Ludhiana. What kind of a price tag does he put on his works? Savi says the minimum cost is Rs 10,000. So for art-lovers who want to go beyond oils, or he purists who scorn at photography as an art, Savi’s digital paintings could prove to be just the kind of thing you were looking for.

Between the abstract and the tactile, the two poles of Swaranjit Savi’s artistic world, fans out the eternal play of the human body. Though he shatters the hegemony of mind over body, both submit to an unqualified celebration of physicality that knows of no system of thought, tradition or indoctrination. That’s why his faces admit of no identity. Savi’s encounter with human forms allows no mediation of any art tradition; the body in his works is neither depicted in any traditional Indian style or school of painting, nor does it follow any modernistic standards. He steps out of all dogma to build a primal dialogue with human forms. As he straddles the two worlds of poetry and painting, Savi imbues each with the other’s possibilities. If his canvases have a lyrical throb to them, his poems are spread out on deepening perspectives. When his two-faced muse turns to his engagement with body, scenes and syllables merge to create a world of Leela -- a celebration of body and beyond.
Even as Savi liberates the body from the shackles of interpretative dogma, he also emancipates the imagination from the rootless abstraction.

Savi’s art has more to do with excavation than representation. The photographer in him does not as much focuses, crops out or narrows down as scoops out. By disinterring the human images buried in the trees, he reinstates the human in nature. His effort to search for the parallels of human patterns in the texture of trees is much like that of scientist who watches a drama of pulsating organisms in what appears a mere blob of blood to the naked eye.
In these photographs, Savi frames out bends, stems and crevices of trees to compose metaphors of human desire. Through the filter of his amazing inventiveness, human figures in trees emerge like sculptures out of stone. Not coincidentally, his compositions indicate an atavistic urge towards the erotic art of Khajuraho.
After his view-finder excavates what can be termed as `the unconscious of the trees, the painter in him imbues it with interpretation, imposing the frames with emphatic hues in primary tones of blood red, green, indigo and yellow. His digital art helps him put a surreal skin on the frames and animate the figures so that they can best be described as digital sculptures.
In Savi;s photographs, one can locate an uncanny echo of the miniature art of the 17th and 19th century, especially the Kangra one. Trees served as important props in the drama of Radha-Krishna love in these miniatures. To heighten the Sringar rasa, the artist would show two trunks of a tree coiled around each other. Savi zooms in on this stylization of miniatures to recuperate a range of emotive themes.
In this series, he not only attempts to shift the co-ordinates of his expression but also yearns to re-configure the genre of photography.

Savi makes a poetic comeback with Ashram

Ludhiana, July 15: A WELL-KNOWN publisher, painter and poet, Swaranjit Savi, makes his comeback to the world of poetry after almost a decade-long hiatus with his book Ashram. It did not take that long to write the poems, says Savi, as it took to compile the book. The writer of much-talked about and controversial books Dehi Naad and Kameshwari, Savi began his foray into the world of poetry in 1987 with Avagya and followed it up in 1990 with another book, Dard Piyarer Hon Da. Both books, according to the writer, concentrated on Punjab in those times, and then in 1994, came Dehi Naad, in 1998, Kala Hashiya Te Suha Gulab with Desire and Kameshwari published in 1999. After this a long silence followed, which was broken by Ashram in 2005.
‘‘My earlier collections of books dwelt on one subject but then soon I saw myself responding to a lot many things around me. This gave birth to so many poems. I wrote on nature, death and many other things. So for Ashram, I spent two years trying to design it and compile it in such a way that the poems which are written on so many different thing can reflect myself,’’ says Savi as he explains his book. The book will be released on July 17.

Talking about his poetry, Savi, especially like that of Dehi Naad and Kameshwari, which created a lot of furore in Punjabi poetic circles, says, ‘‘I knew that these books will create a controversy for these books dealt with celeberation of sex which is a taboo in our society. See we all can discuss sex in group, shred it down to the minutest detail but can never write about it, especially in first person. These books attracted sharp criticism but equal acclaim too. Some called it a shoddy piece of porn while others called it art. For me, these poems were a confession, but then we all are scared of making confessions. Yet these books gave way to a new genre in Punjabi poetry and many are now copying it.’’ Kameshwari, which is a long poem, was staged also.
